Just a few hours remain until Wrexham AFC gets to end their 15-year exile. After a brief pre-season, the Welsh side will be back in action to kick off the much-anticipated EFL League Two. While fans and players are excited for the game, there will be one major absence from the clash.

The Red Dragons will be playing their opening game against MK Dons without their injured star player, Paul Mullin. Everyone must be disappointed with his absence from the emphatic clash. Likewise, it has also left the Welsh striker gutted.

It is quite unlucky for Mullin, as the player is currently resting on a hospital bed. The striker sustained a punctured lung during the pre-season U.S. Tour. The injury came while colliding with Manchester United keeper Nathon Bishop, which will keep him out for at least 6–8 weeks. Not only the club and its fans, but Mullin himself is disheartened by his absence.

The Welsh star went to Twitter and expressed his sadness. “Gutted to not be at the racecourse tomorrow, to hear that roar when the lads walk out that tunnel would have been special! The moment you supporters have been waiting for!! Hopefully we can kick off the season with a win!” he wrote.

The 28-year-old insisted he’ll miss the ardent fans cheering and roaring at the stadium. While expressing his sorrow, the player also backed his fellow teammates to start the new campaign with a win. Indeed, one can understand how much Mullin is gutted about not being able to enjoy the historic game.

Moreover, he’ll be supporting his beloved club from his hospital bed, all alone. That wouldn’t have happened if he had not rejected $50 million rich co-owner Rob McElhenney’s offer.

Currently, Mullin is in the process of recovering from a punctured lung injury in California. It has been ten days since the striker has been living alone in the U.S., as all his teammates have returned to the U.K. to prepare for the upcoming fixture. Despite being in America at the same time, McElhenney and his wife, Kaitlin Olson, offered to host Mullin during his recovery. However, he politely declined the offer.

This was revealed by the Red Dragon’s executive director, Humphrey Ker, in his latest podcast of Rob.Ryan.Red. He said that Mullin preferred not to stay at his boss’s house for an extended period. Ker also stated that the Welsh striker wanted “a bit of space to himself where he could concentrate on his recovery and R&R (rest and relaxation).” Of course, it was quite an understandable situation in the case of Mullin. Moreover, once again, it was quite a classic gesture from one of the owners.
