After Siding With Megan Rapinoe at Kissing Scandal, Serena Williams’ $100,000,000 Side Expresses Support to World Champion

The 2023 Women’s World Cup saw Spain winning a historic title in dramatic circumstances. Nevertheless, the scandalous kissing incident eclipsed the triumph involving Luis Rubiales, the president of Spanish Football, who unsolicitedly kissed a Spanish player. Many players came out in support of the player, Jenni Hermoso, including USWNT star Megan Rapinoe. Other sports stars like Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian backed Rapinoe. And now, he has shared an Instagram story of his franchise supporting the player. 

Angel City FC, partially owned by Alexis Ohanian and Serena Williams, exhibited solidarity with the Spanish soccer player. Thus, the incident has shocked fans all over the world, with many players demanding the resignation of the Spanish FA president.

As the athletes, Spanish soccer players, and fans want him to resign, Rubiales prefers to stay with the club amidst the ongoing controversy. Consequently, Rapinoe came out excited to see the world protesting against Luis. According to Just Women’s Sport, Rapinoe stated, “He’s trying to fight back and everyone’s like, absolutely f—ing not. … So I think that speaks a lot to the progress we have made. I think it’s almost so absurd that he’s continuing down this track.” 

The player also acknowledged men’s players supporting Hermoso. Amidst this, Ohanian shared a story of Angel City FC players holding a banner in support of Hermoso. The headline stated, “Contigo Jenni”, meaning, “With you Jenni.” In addition, the Spanish team opted to abstain from playing any further matches until they settled the matter. Notably, the entire incident unfolded during the World Cup presentation ceremony. Cameras caught Luis kissing Hermoso during the post-match presentation.

It forced FIFA to look into the matter. Meanwhile, Luis denied any wrongdoings and refused to resign from his post.

Rubiales also stated how the players spread lies about the president. While the Spanish government cannot sack him from his position, the head of the state-run Sports Council, Victor Francos, ensured in all their power to take him out of office. Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian support the decision of wanting the president to be dismissed as soon as possible.
