Last night, Brazilian giants Corinthians eliminated Argentinian side Newell’s Old Boys from the Copa Sudamericana Ro16. Played at the Coloso del Parque Marcelo Bielsa stadium, Corinthians went to the semi-finals courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate win over the boyhood club of Lionel Messi. While the 2nd leg was a dull affair ending in a stalemate, the post-match off-field drama by Corinthians more than made up for it.

Corinthians troll Newell’s Old Boys with a throwback post

After securing the win over the Rosario-based side, the Brazilian side went to Twitter to post an old photo of Lionel Messi. The throwback image saw the Barcelona legend hold a Corinthians shirt at their home stadium. The official Twitter [now known as X] account captioned the image with the text “People understand you, Messi,” to add more salt to the wounds of the Argentines.

The photo posted by the Brazilian side dates back to the 2014 World Cup. The image was captured when Argentina battled against the Swiss National Team at Corinthians’ home stadium. Hence as seen in the photo, the phrase “Messi, welcome to the Corinthians Arena.” was stamped on the jacket.

This gesture by the Brazilian side is surely gonna sting the Argentines. After all, Messi is the biggest champion to hail from the club. Moreover, the G.O.A.T. has publicly stated multiple times his desire to return back to his boyhood club before his retirement.

Back in 2016, Lionel Messi announced his shock retirement from International football after a heartbreaking Copa America loss. While he did reverse his decision soon, many got a sense that retirement is certainly looming in the mind of Messi. Hence at an interview months later, Leo was quipped about his club retirement plans. In his conversation with TyC Sports, the former Barcelona player admitted his dream to go back to Newell’s before his retirement. However, he is afraid to do so keeping the violent atmosphere in the soccer culture of Argentina in mind.

I’ve said many times that my dream is to play at Newell’s but I don’t know what will happen. And a part of that doubt is due to the way the country is at the moment,” said Messi. “I have a family and my children come first, and then me. I want them to grow up in a calm place, being able to enjoy life with security,” bluntly admitted the Inter Miami player.
