Legendary Sir Alex Ferguson once said, “Attacks win you games, defenses win you titles.” However, it seems the USMNT legend has forgotten it. He again took a dig at those urging for strengthening the defenses in MLS upon the arrival of Lionel Messi. He feels it’s the entertaining side that will hook more audiences to the game rather than keep defending.
Lionel Messi is on an enormous goalscoring streak since arriving in the US. There are suggestions that the poor defenses allowed the Argentine to score freely. Many have urged the clubs to strengthen the defenses. But that’s what Alexi Lalas is against. He feels Messi’s goals are captivating the audiences and again took a dig at the ones urging to sign defenders.

Lionel Messi blanked for the first time in the game after arriving in the US. However, his two assists helped Inter Miami come down from two goals to take the game to the penalties and beat FC Cincinnati to reach the final of the US Open Cup. It was an entertaining game, and Lalas feels this is how MLS can hook the audience.
Lalas recently spoke about the same. Accordingly, “Why are you complaining that people aren’t defending more? This is for my defender, I don’t give a cr*p if the defenders are good. I wanna see goals. I wanna see attacking soccer. I don’t want MLS to now go run out and spend money on defenders. That’s not sexy; nobody gives a cr*p about that. People wanna see goals and Messi scores goals. People don’t want to see defending.”
But…but…but…defending. https://t.co/uLW8Fny3HB

He reiterated the same after Inter Miami defeated Cincinnati in the US Open Cup final. It was an entertaining game that saw a flurry of the goals in the dying moments. Lalas feels that’s what fans want to see. He mocked the ones arguing for strengthening the defenses with a tweet. Lalas wrote, “But…but…but…defending.” Lalas wants to see more goals and entertainment going ahead.
Nevertheless, the lack of defense has certainly helped Messi as he looks to clinch the all-time top scorer honor during his stint at Inter Miami.

Lionel Messi has ten goals to his name for Inter Miami. He notched them in just seven appearances. However, he blanked in the 8th game. Messi is already in the top three of Inter Miami’s all-time goalscoring list despite going goalless against FC Cincinnati.
Gonzalo Higuain with (29) and Leonardo Campana (18) are ahead of him. He is joint third with Josef Martinez. Messi has a ratio of over one goal per game, and at this rate, he can outscore Higuain and Campana soon. But will he be able to do it season remains to be seen.
