Emily Atack, a beloved British actress, comedian, and presenter, who became a household name with her performance in The Inbetweeners, recently touched the hearts of many on a BBC show with a gripping story of her grandparents. But what made her move to tears, and what did she lie to her grandad on his deathbed?

Emily Atack’s great grandad served in Welsh FA

Atack learned that her great-grandad, Ted Robbins, was associated with Wrexham AFC. However, she met Professor Martin Johnes of Wales to know more about Ted. Johnes busted her perception that Ted was associated with Wrexham. The Welsh Professor informed Atack that her great grandfather was secretary of the Football Association of Wales (FAW). 

An accountant by profession, Ted played amateur soccer during his youth days with the local team, Wrexham Ivanhoe. Meanwhile, in 1909, FAW sacked the then-secretary. They hired Ted, who served in the position until his sudden death in 1946. To date, he remains the longest-serving secretary of the FAW. 

Professor Johnes detailed Emily Ted’s significant role with Welsh national team. He was in charge of almost everything. The British actress also learned about his kind nature and Ted’s contribution to the nation’s soccer. But when she read the obituary, Atack wasn’t able to hold off her tears. It was a moment of pride for The Inbetweeners actress.

The obituary read, “Wales loses Ted Robbins. By his passing, the home of football has lost one of its greatest, most loveable characters. Ted Robbins was one of the nature’s noblemen.” Meanwhile, Ted passed on the soccer legacy to his son, Mike. Mike Robbins was a die-hard Wrexham AFC fan. The actor also revealed how she lied to her grandad Mike when he was on his deathbed.

Should we call it a lie or a white lie? Atack was at the side of Mike in his last few hours. Her sister also accompanied her. While on the deathbed, the 37-year-old intentionally lied to her grandad about the game result.

Despite Wrexham lost the game that day, she told him otherwise. It was heartwarming news for Mike, who supported the Red Dragons throughout his life. And moments later, he took a last breath.
