After the 2022 World Cup, Angel Di Maria has been taking some major steps towards his career. The Argentine legend has already announced his decision to step away from international soccer after the 2024 Copa America. Additionally, it appears like his country will also miss him playing in its land after death threats to him and his family. After rejecting the Saudi Pro League and MLS before, has Di Maria opened those doors once again?
What an incredible fortune it could be for Argentine soccer fans to watch its two legends face off. Di Maria and Messi can potentially land up in their hometown, with Rozario playing for their childhood clubs. But reports suggest that Di Maria could withdraw his decision to move to Primera Division club Rosario Central. Also, the 36-year-old is contemplating a contract extension with Benfica or moving to Saudi Arabia or the MLS.
Di Maria’s affinity for his former clubs looks high. The player initially chose to return to Benfica, where he played for three years before his legendary spell at Real Madrid. However, after his current spell at Benfica, Argentina’s most prolific goal scorer wanted to return to Rosario Central.

On the other hand, Di Maria has also received interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Inter Miami. But Rosario Central holds a special place for the 2021 Copa America winner. The club is based in Di Maria’s hometown of Rosario, where he played during his initial years. But it seems like the dream is under threat, much to the disappointment of Rosario Central.

Meanwhile, developments have taken place in the aftermath of a horrific death threat posted to him and his family recently. A drug mafia in Rosario has reportedly asked Di Maria to stay away from the city or warned to kill even his daughter. Claiming even the city’s provincial governor, Maximiliano Pullaro, to have minimal control over his safety after returning, the narco-terrorists left a sign in front of Di Maria’s housing estate. Security of the estate also reported hearing detonations before the car ran away.
Therefore, the former Real Madrid player seems to prioritize his family’s safety. Di Maria still has a couple of months to consider an extension at Benfica. The Portuguese giants have earlier expressed their interest in keeping him for another year after his contract expires in June 2024.
