The trend of buying stakes in soccer clubs continues to boom, doesn’t it? Countless renowned names and fresh faces have eagerly stepped forward to make the right investment, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney serving as prime examples, who invested millions in Wrexham three years ago. Even though this venture resulted in $11.3 million in losses, Reynolds specifically is now eyeing the purchase of another club!
To remind you, just this summer, the Deadpool star, along with McElhenney, reportedly sold a 5% stake in return for acquiring minority ownership in the LIGA MX side Club Necaxa. They’re not the only A-listers involved in the Tylis-Porter investment group of the Mexican club, as the list also includes actors Eva Longoria and Kate Upton, retired soccer star Mesut Özil, Miami Dolphins star Odell Beckham Jr., and Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander.
However, as per the reports from South American sports journalist Mariano Olsen, Reynolds is keen to expand his soccer investment portfolio. This time, he is reportedly eyeing Bogota, Colombia-based club La Equidad. Well, he isn’t alone, as it’s the whole Tylis-Porter investment group that will be pumping their money into the club and it is being said that the deal is expected to be completed in January.

Notably, La Equidad competes in Categoria Primera A, a top tier of the Colombian domestic system. They have yet to open their account on the silverware front. Boasting a 10,000-seater Estadio Metropolitano de Techo as their home ground, the club was founded back in 1982 and is apparently valued at around $16 million.

Then again, if their latest deal is set to be completed, then the presence of such A-listers who already have key experience working with clubs will greatly benefit La Equidad. Specifically, they’ll be looking to imitate Reynolds’ Wrexham model. This reminds us, why would Reynolds decide to go for another investment if his most prolific investment is keeping him in loss?
Why are Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney not profiting since investing in Wrexham?
Rob and Ryan initially invested $2.5 million in what was then a fifth-division side. Notably, in the fiscal year ending June 2023, Wrexham reported losses of $6.4 million, a sharp rise from the $3.7 million recorded in 2022. These losses were covered by substantial financial support from the Hollywood owners, amounting to $11.3 million, with the rising debt closely mirroring the previous year’s losses.

The increased losses were primarily driven by a 70% surge in the club’s wage bill, which reached $8.7 million in 2023. This hike in expenses came despite the club generating just $13.2 million in revenue during the same period. “These losses were deemed necessary to allow the club to maximize its full potential in the shortest time practically possible,” the club wrote in their report.
Interestingly, Wrexham clarified that there is no immediate pressure to repay their Hollywood owners. However, Reynolds and McElhenney intend to recover the loan amount in the long term, with plans for repayment already in progress.
