What are fans’ plans to address the takeover turmoil at Manchester United?
The 1958 fan group of United urged other supporters to join them at the Trinity statue on Monday outside Old Trafford at 6.30 pm. Manchester United fans planned to voice their protest against the owners when the club’s Premier League season kicks off at Old Trafford. They pledged to continue their protest until the Glazers take a firm decision to sell the club.
For more context, on November 2022, the Glazer family announced that they were exploring strategic alternatives for their ownership of Manchester United, including the possibility of selling the club for a valuation of $5 billion. Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe were the frontrunners in the race to buy the club.

The global community of Manchester United fans, numbering more than 1.1 billion, was initially divided in their preference between the interest from Qatar and the INEOS for ownership. However, the lack of official communication from the American investors, even after three rounds of bidding, had angered supporters and led to protests in the upcoming season opener of the Red Devils.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) believed that the Glazers were using the takeover process as a way to extract more money from the club and that they had no intention of selling United anytime soon. Former Manchester United star, David Beckham, shared the fans’ solicitude about the Glazers’ ownership of Manchester United and agreed that the club needs a change.

He said to the Athletic, “I think so. I think it’s purely because the fans want it. Once you lose the fans, especially at a club like Manchester United, it’s hard to get them back.”

Meanwhile, MUST issued a memo to supporters expressing their shared anguish and the fans’ emotions about the situation, addressing the worldwide audience of the Reds. It would state, “As we approach the start of the new season there is a huge amount of frustration at the lack of progress with the sale of the club. It is clear we need new investment for major projects.” The memo went on to discuss the briefing for the protest with the 1958 fan club ahead of the match against Wolves in the Premier League.
