The 2023 Women’s World Cup boasts record attendance, and the USWNT is one of the best teams in the world. Yet, Alex Morgan fails to show her quality in this year’s World Cup. She has not scored in this tournament, and it’s becoming a problem for the team. The women’s national team depends on her for goals, and Morgan and Co failed to score against Portugal. Well, the legendary Carli Lloyd predicted it right.
She explained how taking Alex out of the team would make things interesting. With the Netherlands winning their match, they advanced from the group as table toppers. One goal for Portugal would have been curtains for the USWNT as they hit the post in the stoppage time. But they scrapped through. Heading to the knockout rounds, coach Vlatko Andonovski has a decision to make.

According to Marca, Lloyd explained various issues with Morgan starting the match. Lloyd stated, “To spice things up a little bit, to change it up, I am going with the line-up that is behind me. I am taking Alex Morgan out. She’s done well, she’s occupied the centre-backs, she’s dragged and pulled players out and whatnot.” The sensational Lloyd described the tactical flexibility within the team with a different approach.
Lloyd continued, “But I just feel like the three up top have been very narrow, so we need to create some width. So, we can put Sophia Smith up in the 9, on the left Trinity Rodman, on the right Lynn Williams.” Naomi Girma is the current torchbearer of the team, along with Sophia Smith. These two are playing sensational for the team and will be crucial for the team’s success moving forward.
But how can someone drop Morgan? Imagine Erling Haaland in Manchester City. Even if he has a poor run of form, it’s not a straightforward decision to drop him because of the quality he possesses. Morgan goes in a similar vein.

Alex Morgan’s performance for this World Cup
It’s not surprising that Morgan is the leader of the team. She won the gold medal for the USWNT during the 2012 Olympics while winning two World Cups in 2015 and 2019. Being an inspirational soccer mom, she breaks all barriers in the USWNT soccer scenario. But her performance in the current World Cup is far from satisfactory. In the three games she appeared in, Morgan only created one assist. In fact, the goal-scoring wonder woman had only fewer shots to show for this World Cup.
Even though the team is winning matches, the performance of Morgan has come under scrutiny. Is it time for the team to keep her on the bench, according to the words of Carli Lloyd?
