The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is underway, with teams battling out with each other for supremacy. Of those teams, England, Canada, USWNT, and Australia are some favorites to win. Even Spain looks likely to go deep in the tournament. And most of these teams are rivals; especially the US and Canadian women’s soccer teams. The two countries share a border with no love lost as Canada defeated the US at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Yet, they drew their first World Cup game, which sent shockwaves throughout the soccer fraternity.

Usually, when a top team fails to win matches, the sports fraternity reacts with bantering and takes cheeky digs at others. Hence, the legendary Tobin Heath used Instagram Threads to voice her opinion. An eye-opening statement, nonetheless.

Reacting to the draw, Heath mentioned on Threads, “I still can’t believe that Canada won Gold at the Olympics. #WC.” To every banter, there is a back story. During the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Canadian team defeated the USWNT en route to their gold medal victory. The US Women’s soccer team aimed to win their fifth gold medal. They managed to win the bronze medal but couldn’t repeat their success similar to the 2019 World Cup. On the other hand, Canada performed admirably well and claimed their first Olympic gold medal.

The team won the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after winning the penalty shoot-out against Sweden. It became a historic moment for the country and celebrated a spectacular victory. One of the crucial players of the team was Christine Sinclair.

After winning the gold medal, Sinclair mentioned, “I honestly cannot even believe what just happened. For the last 40 days, we had a goal to come in here and change the color of the medal, and we landed on top of the podium. Just such an honor to be part of this group.”

Canadian national women’s soccer team has their plans derailed

Sinclair is one of the world’s leading all-time scorers and became influential in Canada’s journey to win the gold medal. One favorite to win the World Cup, the team went against the 40th-ranked Nigeria, who defended remarkably well. The game’s marked moment came when they were awarded a penalty. Sinclair stepped up to take the penalty, and Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a stunning save to deny her.
