The USWNT had not conceded a goal in the last 33 matches in CONCACAF competitions. Mexico bucked the trend today with Jacqueline Ovalle’s 38th-minute strike. Mayra Pelayo-Bernal finished Mexico’s 2-0 rout of the 2019 World Champions with a 92nd-minute goal. Besides, Mexico now has also finished as the champions of Group A in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup. The USWNT, on the other hand, remained a misfiring side despite starting Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith and later bringing in superstar Alex Morgan off the bench.
After the loss, the US team became the talk of the town in soccer circles, obviously for the wrong reasons. Fans now blast the USWNT for falling short against Mexico, despite maintaining more possession than their archrivals.

Despite having the ball for more time than Mexico, Twila Kilgore’s side failed to come up with many potent attacks. They had 7 shots, of which only 1 was on target. Meanwhile, Mexico shot 11 times and converted two out of their three strikes on goal. They outsmarted the US in terms of attacking prowess. The USWNT announced the disappointing outcome on X, only to invite mockery from a mob of upset fans. “Absolutely shameful and embarrassing,” a fan replied to the US team’s post.
Absolutely shameful and embarrassing.

This fan ruthlessly predicted USWNT’s doom. The 2019 World Champions have had a bumpy ride regarding their coach situation. Vlatko Andonovski resigned after USWNT’s 2023 World Cup loss. Twila Kilgore came in as an interim coach, waiting for current Chelsea WT boss, Emma Hayes, to take over.
Mexico was excellent tonight. This USWNT team cannot be saved. Doesn’t matter the coach, it’s the players. A MESS.

Here’s a fan who laments the downfall of the team that won two consecutive World Cup titles in the last decade.
USWNT isn’t good enough to just show up! Other countries don’t fear this team anymore! They don’t have the mentality against solid competition anymore sad

The vast majority of fans were quite unhappy with USWNT’s result. They recalled the US’ glorious past and bemoaned the team’s plummet since the 2020 Olympics. Meanwhile, a select few fans urged the US team to get back on track. Even though USWNT failed against Mexico, they have qualified for the tournament’s quarterfinals. Alex Morgan and Co. will be pitted against the top seeds of the adjacent group, which will probably be Brazil.
