Phil Parkinson was critical of referee Ben Speedie’s decision to award a penalty to Bradford City for Aaron Hayden’s challenge on Jamie Walker. The Wrexham coach felt that the officials made an error without properly judging the incident.
Parkinson remarked in an interview, “For an absolutely nothing incident, the ref has given a penalty. He’s got four players in between him and the incident and he’s told me it was him who gave it, but there is absolutely no way he can see it so he’s clearly guessed”.
Wrexham’s head coach believed that the linesman on the attacking half of Bradford City should have been consulted before awarding the penalty, as he had a better view of the incident. Phil Parkinson praised his players for their performance against the Bantams despite the loss and for their ability to come back from a goal down in the game.

Tyler Smith converted a penalty for the Bantams in the third minute of the game. William Boyle made the score level in the 72nd minute with a header from the corner kick after the Reds had 4 out of 19 shots on target.
The Wrexham boss’s successful spell as a manager of Bradford and leading them to the League Cup final during his 5 years at Valley Parade made the tie significant for him. As it stands, the National League winners would be looking to put their EFL Cup disappointment behind them and continue their League Two campaign with a win against Tranmere Rovers this Saturday.
