Being an owner of a sporting entity is never easy. There will always be that constant need to keep pumping in money into the system to become the best. Over the years, across sports, especially soccer, we have seen teams go from spending millions in one year to declaring bankruptcy a couple of years later.

Fans always love it with an ex-player or famous personality owns the sports team that they support. It has recently surfaced that American football defensive end, J. J. Watt is interested in the soccer market.

J. J. Watt does have his roots buried in soccer

In a recent conversation with Front Office Sports, J. J. Watt was asked whether owning a soccer team was on the cards or not. With an immediate response, J. J. Watt said, “It definitely interests me. There’s definitely an interest there for me. I don’t know even that situation majority ownership, the responsibility and you basically have to pick yourself up move there to do it fully the right way or at least have somebody you extremely trust in that role but I do think a percentage of a soccer team would definitely interest me”.

Watt continued, “My wife plays soccer, I’ve been very interested in soccer. Probably leaned really heavily into European soccer in the last five to ten years and that is something with the passion, the fan base, the history, the tradition that does hold some interest of”.

J. J. Watt already has a soccer connection right in his family. In 2022, the NFL defensive end married Kealia Watt, an American soccer player who plies her trade at the Chicago Red Stars. The Chicago Red Stars compete in the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States.

Drogba is Watt’s soccer hero!

J. J. Watt turns out to be a big Didier Drogba fan. The two sports personalities happen to be playing in the same state and the same valley. Despite playing a different sports, both clubs go by the name of football clubs. While called football in the rest of the world, Americans call it soccer. We’re talking about Phoenix Rising Football Club where Drogba currently is and Arizona Cardinals Football Club where Watt currently is.

Watt has revealed in the past that his first true interaction with soccer was when he played FIFA. He always liked to pick Ivory Coast. That’s how Watt discovered Drogba. Watt then tracked down the club that Drogba plays for. At that point in time, Drogba was at Chelsea. Drogba was having the best spell of his career, winning loads of silverware every season for Chelsea.
