Manchester City’s rocky relationship with the Premier League has seen a fiery new episode. The Sky Blues have launched a legal battle against the league’s associated party transaction (APT) rules. Notably, the APT was introduced in 2021 after the takeover of Newcastle United. The rules were voted in favor by the majority of clubs, including the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, etc. While the Premier League is attempting to fight vigorously against City’s claims, they have the backing of the aforementioned clubs. Why so?
Stefan Borson, former advisor at Manchester City gave his take on the incident. appearing on talkSPORT Breakfast. “I think it’s more about the fact that you’ve got around the table, very competitive owners. A lot of ego, a lot of money and people want to again and ultimately, City won a lot. And a lot of the historically more successful clubs, such as Liverpool, Arsenal, United, we know who they are. Don’t really like it,” he said. It seems that Borson is hinting that Manchester City’s success on the pitch is what has caused the other clubs to side with the Premier League.

As per Borson, this is why, since 2012, there has been an increasing drip of rules and regulations. Interestingly, this is the time when Manchester City’s status was elevated, helping them become English elite. Regardless, the legal battle is not a good look for Guardiola’s side. Previously, they were already facing allegations of breaking 115 FFP charges. Despite the accusations being a year old, a court hearing is yet to take place. But a famed journalist has made a connection between the FFP charges and the current saga.

If Manchester City wants to take down the APT rules, then it would need a majority vote from 14 of the Premier League clubs. Considering how the other sides are against the Sky Blues, Guardiola’s side referred to the situation as a ‘tyranny’ of the majority. But prominent journalist Henry Winter doesn’t agree. He said that the English champions have the best players, managers, fantastic stadiums, and more.
As a result, he can’t agree that the English champions are an oppressed club. He added, “Maybe this is just a counter-strike because they want to distract or put pressure on the Premier League as they head towards the big hearing. City deny all allegations against them but this just reeks.” After hearing Winter’s interesting observation, do you agree with him regarding Manchester City’s pressure tactics? Or is it just a wild theory? Let us know below in the comments.
