A couple of days ago, Lionel Messi & Co started their World Cup qualifiers with a 1-0 victory against Ecuador. The matchwinner was scored by none other than La Pulga, who with his freekick managed to reach David Beckham’s record of scoring 65 freekick goals. Ecuador’s loss wasn’t taken well by Leo’s Inter Miami teammate as he was visibly upset with his country’s loss.
Speaking after a match-winning performance for Inter Miami, 23-year-old Leonardo Campana expressed his grief at his country’s roadblock on the path to the World Cup. Surprisingly, the player revealed that he had already anticipated the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s free-kick threat for his country. His response ever since has been the talk of the town.

Earlier today, Inter Miami squared off against Sporting KC in a thrilling encounter. Sporting went 1-0 up quickly within the first 10 minutes. However, Leo Campana filled Messi’s void as his brace and a 60th-minute Facundo Farias strike ensured Inter Miami’s victory.
After the 3-2 victory, Campana in his post-match presser was quipped about Lionel Messi’s freekick to defeat his country Ecuador. In response, the ex-Wolves attacker first emphasized how Messi is a master freekick taker. “For [Messi] a free kick is like a penalty for a normal person.”
The Ecuadorian then expressed his grief to see his country losing. He however made it clear that he was happy with Messi and his freekick. “I knew it could complicate [Ecuador], and as I said, I’m a little sad for my country, but obviously happy for [Messi that he scored that goal].”

After speaking about the match, the talented attacker expressed his cluelessness about not being called up by the National Team. After a slow start to his Inter Miami career, the center-forward has been picking up form with impressive outings over the last few months.

Ecuador under coach F.Sanchez has been playing in a 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 formation. While the role of veteran Enner Valencia up top is locked, Campana with his finishing can become a great complementary piece as the target man. While he has the qualities to fit in, what Campana lacks is goals and experience. Now that he also has started scoring goals, his exclusion is a bit confusing.
When asked why, the Miami striker had no answer. However, he did have the answer to his next course of action. In order to get selected, Campana plans to work even more hard and be consistent. “I know that by doing things well here I will have my opportunity for selection and I have always thought if, as I told you, someone doing things well on their team is going to be called up, and I have to continue working.”
