The soccer universe has had many legends, from generation to generation. But a few of these will stick out a little more than the rest. This soccer generation has legends like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who will undoubtedly be remembered forever.
Lionel Messi is always compared to many accomplished soccer stars, especially Cristiano Ronaldo. Fans still haven’t been able to decide whether one of them is the greatest of all time or not. For American fans, making that choice is harder.

The sports fan bases in the U.S. are diversified into many sports. Whenever someone does not get a soccer reference, they try to draw an analogy to the closest sport they watch.
Who is Lionel Messi being compared to now?
Something similar happened on social media recently. Since the Argentine legend won the World Cup, the comparisons and discussions between fan bases just haven’t stopped. The Mail on Sunday’s Chief Sports Writer, Oliver Holt, posted a tweet recently. In that tweet, he compared Lionel Messi to the likes of Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Tom Brady.
I can’t believe you tried to sneak Tom Brady in this you are INSANE https://t.co/K9tABlYvqI

However, Holt’s tweet got quite a response. One of the responses to that tweet was quite surprising. That fan said, “I can’t believe you tried to sneak Tom Brady in this you are INSANE”. As usual, fans never fail to disappoint with their controversial opinions.
Let’s have a look at a few of the other reactions that this tweet got.
Lol!!! What an absolutely bizarre tweet

It’s an insult to Pele, Maradona and Messi to even compare to Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Tom Brady. You have zero idea about the magnitude of Messi, Maradona and Pele. The only comparable US athlete is Muhammad Ali.

He’s already bigger than every single one of them mate. He’s the greatest ever player in the biggest sport in the world

How many people outside the US have even heard of Gretzky?! These people are not comparable. Brady too. Jordan yes, but the others, not so much.

He's above those guys. They play sports that only a handful of nations play. Football is global
— Chris Andre Boxing (@BetBoxing) December 18, 2022
He surpassed them all, comfortably

Holt received a fairly mixed bunch of reactions to his tweet. While some fans were clearly in favor of Holt’s statement, others drastically opposed it and called soccer a more ‘global’ sport.
