The controversial exit of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United definitely caused quite a stir. The 5x Ballon d’Or winner was released from the Premier League club back in November after a controversial interview with Piers Morgan.

The 37-year-old was left with no club and fans wondered what the next step for one of the best athletes of all time was. The Portuguese striker was offered to come to America and join the MLS by various teams. One of these invites came from Hollywood star Will Ferrell.

Will Ferrell’s invitation to Cristiano Ronaldo

Will Ferrell, along with NBA legend and two-time Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, are owners of the MLS team Los Angeles FC. After news of Ronaldo’s departure, Will Ferrell invited Ronaldo to join his team saying, “Always come to LA! You’re welcome”.

Then, in his own funny way, he added, “We can’t pay you that much, but there’s really nice golf courses and beaches. Just try it!”. Unfortunately for Ferrell, his invitation didn’t work and Ronaldo ended up choosing Saudi Arabia over the United States.

Ronaldo on 30 December signed with Saudi club Al Nassr in a deal worth a reported $200 million per year. While making him the highest-paid soccer player in the world. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Ferrell would have loved to see Ronaldo join his team.

Magic Johnson is a big sports investor

In addition to being an NBA legend, Magic Johnson is also a savvy businessman and heavily invested in several sports franchises. Johnson made his big investment in 2013 when he became a part-owner of the then-expansion MLS franchise Los Angeles FC. The team made its MLS debut in 2018 and is now worth an impressive $1 billion.

Along with the soccer team, Johnson is also a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. Clearly, Magic Johnson is not afraid to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to investing in sports. And his track record suggests that he knows a good investment when he sees one.
