The NWSL clubs continue to make headlines, with this time Washington Spirit on the front page of the newspaper. Trinity Rodman’s side recently clinched a major sports award, thanks to a $35 million investment from American businesswoman Michele Kang. The Spirits have won the Sports Business Journal Deal of the Year award in North America.

This award signifies the incredible value of women’s sports, as they have surpassed NBA side Phoenix Suns for their massive $4 billion takeover. Kang, who is a businesswoman, owns a medical technology company, Cognosante. The DC-based entrepreneur bought a minority stake in December 2020.

After the club faced a string of allegations concerning abuse and mismanagement, Kang urged then-co-owner Steve Baldwin to relinquish control of the team to her. This led the millionaire to buy the team for a whopping $35 million. Indeed, her investment has finally paid off, as it helped her clinch the major award.
