Lionel Messi‘s eighth Ballon d’Or marked an unprecedented achievement in soccer history. Besides his individual awards, he has also won a staggering 44 trophies. Perhaps, the ‘greatest‘ debate has finally been put to an end. Adidas certainly seems to think that way. To celebrate the Inter Miami star, they have re-created an iconic photo. One that draws parallels to NBA’s Bill Russell, who was also ‘unrivaled’ during his time.
Following his move to Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has hit the ground running. With his 11 goals in as many matches and 5 assists, the Argentine inspired Inter Miami to their first major trophy, the Leagues Cup. Very few athletes have ever been as dominant in any sport.

Lionel Messi recently did a photoshoot with Adidas, highlighting 8 golden rings on his hands, representing his eight Ballon d’Or wins. Each of them has a unique symbol of particular significance to Messi’s career.
The first ring titled “El Baso” celebrates Messi’s goal in the 2009 Champions League final. The second ring “Apunta al cielo” showcases one of his unique celebrations. The “G.O.A.T” ring signifies his 3rd Ballon d’Or win in 2011 while “El Año” celebrates his incredible 91 goals scored in 2012. A unique symbol consisting of six boots and six balls, signifying his 6th European Golden Boot victory in 2019 is, perhaps, the highlight of them all.
Three of the other rings celebrate his Champions League Victory, Copa America Success, and World Cup Triumph in 2015, 2021, and 2022 respectively. A creative-looking photoshoot, but one that brings back some memories.

The Bill Russell photo from 1996 had him posing with his hands on his face, with more rings on his hand than fingers. The Lionel Messi photo might be lacking in rings but it is no less iconic. Messi is no stranger to NBA comparisons. Back in 2016, the official Barcelona website had compared Messi to NBA legend Michael Jordan. A testimony to the longevity of the Argentine playmaker.

Did Adidas intentionally pay homage to the NBA icon?
Back in 1996, NBA icon Bill Russell made heads turn with his iconic photo displaying all the rings he won. The Boston Celtics center won 11 championships in his 13-year career, winning the first one in his rookie year. The only notable difference between the Messi and Russell photoshoot is the number of rings worn. Whether intentional or not, a clever reference from Adidas to celebrate Messi’s achievement considering the stature of both icons.
Did Adidas intentionally recreate the iconic Bill Russels photo? Or was it perhaps a great coincidence? Let us know in the comments below.
