The 1994-1995 was a dark period for the MLB. The season witnessed the longest mid-season work stoppage eventually leading to the cancellation of the postseason and the World Series. The stoppage caused by the salary cap issue made a huge dent in American baseball as it saw a huge drop in viewership over the next few seasons.
All this, however, changed in 1998 when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa delivered record-breaking performances. The summer of ’98 saw both breaking Roger Maris’ 1961 record of 61 home runs in a single season with Sosa hitting 66 home runs and Mark McGwire hitting 70 home runs.
