Sometimes sportspersons go beyond their particular domain to make some tactics and concepts more understandable. Recently, two master tacticians in their respective fields met up to discuss instances of improvisation. During Pep Guardiola‘s recent conversation with a legendary figure, he remembered Tiger Woods for an Erling Haaland goal. But what could have possibly brought the golf icon into the discussion?

The legendary Tiger Woods is known for winning four PGA Championships in a row, making the Tiger Woods slam. Even though the player was not involved with Pep Guardiola in any cross-sport collaboration, Pep unexpectedly made an analogy by mentioning him during a brainstorming session.

Getting more popular day by day, Manchester City arranged for a small discussion between chess legend Magnus Carlsen and Pep Guardiola. In the conversation, Pep talks of Haaland’s goal against Brighton, where he takes down the defender with power to remind Pep about Tiger Woods’ 5-iron club. Pep says, “And in the right moment, Erling runs, and it is man-to-man if you win that duel. Normally, I’m not a big fan of that. But it’s like a counter-attack; you have to use it sometimes, like Tiger Woods and a five-iron.”

Here, Tiger Woods and his 5-iron club were brought into the conversation when Pep was explaining a counterattack goal. The 5-iron golf club with Tiger Woods has the ability to effectively complete the hole in tough conditions with his power and control. In the same way, Haaland could take down the defender who was marking him.

The method of marking Haaland is called man-to-man, where one person is assigned to handle one player on the opposite team. Pep, however, claims he’s not a big fan of that particular method. The former FC Barcelona manager is known for using a lot of passing play and maneuvering in his style, unlike a direct, straightforward attack.

The main point of the conversation was about how Pep Guardiola attacks. The City coach claimed that it would all depend on how others defend. And here in Haaland’s case, he had to break the mark because of his power and make use of the opportunity.

Carlsen already stated earlier that he also changes tactics on a chessboard based on what the opponent is doing. It is clearly evident that the greats of many sports are masters of their style of doing things. But the lesson is clear: sometimes you need to adapt to unfamiliar methods as well.
