Renault F1 team president Jerome Stoll believes that Daniel Ricciardo could be a boon for them. He thinks that the Australian’s arrival could inspire Renault to become a title-winning force in Formula 1 once again. A couple of days ago, Ricciardo snubbed the Red Bull team by turning down a contract extension to pen a two-year deal with Renault.

With Red Bull’s gamble to take Honda power units, their pace will be an unknown. This could likely open up third place in the constructors championship. In light of this, the French squad are in prime position to secure it. Especially after landing themselves in fourth in 2018 courtesy the performances of Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jr.

The last time Renault were world champions was back in 2006 with Fernando Alonso. The veteran Spaniard completed back-to-back championship campaigns at that time. Now, there is hope in the team that Ricciardo’s arrival could herald the start of another golden age.

“Signing Daniel Ricciardo is a unique opportunity for the Groupe Renault towards this objective that could not be missed.

“We welcome Daniel’s arrival to our team, still in the making, but more motivated than ever.”

Ever since they returned to the F1 championship in 2016, Renault have not scored a podium finish in F1. The French marquee rose from the ashes of the defunct Lotus team in 2016. However, team principal Cyril Abiteboul is confident that Ricciardo’s arrival will motivate them to deliver a competitive car in 2019.

“It is also a recognition of the work accomplished over the past two and a half seasons. Daniel’s undoubted talent and charisma are a huge bonus and statement for the team.

“We will have to repay his faith in us by delivering the best car possible. We welcome him to our growing team in 2019 with a great deal of pride, but also humility.”
