American player Shelby Rogers was made to sweat in her second round match against 25th seed Daria Gavrilova, but nevertheless she persisted. Gavrilova is a player who is quick and is able to chase down a number of shots. It took an astounding 3 and 1/2 hours but she finally managed to battle past the Australian.
This match was touted as the longest US Open match in women’s history lasting 3 hours and 33 minutes. “I didn’t feel like it was the longest match ever,” Rogers said. “But it’s starting to set in a little bit now. Going to be sore.” The final score read 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 in Rogers’ favour. The previous holders for the longest match was Johanna Konta and Garbine Muguruza in 2015, a match that lasted 3 hours and 23 minutes. Gavrilova said that the last two points were the difference between winning and losing.
Gavrilova won the Connecticut Open last week in preparation for Flushing Meadows. The US Open is the only Grand Slam that implements a tie breaker in the deciding set. Rogers now moves into the 3rd round to face 4th seed Elina Svitolina, but before that she decided to get a well deserved rest.
