Sebastian Coates has affirmed that his choice of moving to Sunderland from Liverpool was an easy decision, according to Liverpool Echo.
Coates recently moved permanently to the Stadium of Light from Liverpool for £4 million, after playing four years for the Reds. Last year, he was playing for Sunderland on loan, but didn’t get chances early on due to his consistent injury crisis.
The 24-year-old Uruguayan was a part of the Liverpool’s squad after they had signed him from the Uruguay-based club Nacional. He hadn’t been getting regular chances to display his talent on the field. This led to him looking elsewhere to play where he would be a valuable asset, which he was understood to be. After struggling to achieve a starting place even for the Black Cats, only after the arrival of Dick Advocaat, the new boss, did he get regular play time. They went on to save themselves from relegation with him playing a critical role.
Coates told the Liverpool Echo:
“When I first came here last year I just did it to play games and recover from my injuries.
“I did not think about making it permanent. For me, it was a tough season but playing in the last six games was great.
“It was an easy decision to come back because I know the manager, my team-mates, the club and the supporters. It was really easy.
“The last month of the season changed everything but that is football. It was a great month for me and of course that was the best bit of the season for me.
“It was not certain I would leave Liverpool this summer but I always thought I would have to speak with the club and see what the situation was.
“I knew it was a great opportunity to come to Sunderland and play regularly in the Premier League. That is why I’m here.
“You have to take those chances and I hope I have the opportunity to play regularly.”
A very strong defender, Sebastian Coates has played 16 games for his national side, scoring a goal. Throughout his 4-year tenure for Liverpool, he found himself either injured, or on loan and hence played only 24 games in this period.
