Dre Greenlaw’s first week into the regular season cost him an injury early on and a fine of $5,169. The San Francisco 49ers registered a 41-33 victory against the Niners, but the day did not seem to favor the linebacker.
Greenlaw sprinted 39 yards for an interception return for a touchdown. But in the moment of his first career touchdown, the linebacker waved at the Lions defenders before he even reached the touchline.
Quite a pick-6 for #49ers LB Dre Greenlaw last week. He was fined $5,169 for unsportsmanlike conduct for waving goodbye to the #Lions on his TD… and tore his groin and underwent core muscle surgery (which was successful).

Rapoport report on Dre Greenlaw
That wave cost him $5,169 as the NFL fined the young man for his “un-sportsman-like conduct for waving goodbye to the Lions on his TD”. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday morning citing league sources.
Adding on to his suffering, the 24-year-old linebacker also aggravated a core muscle injury on the play that he had been dealing with for some time. Following which the 49ers officially placed him on injured reserve on Saturday morning as he opted to have surgery.

Greenlaw will now be eligible to return after three weeks, although his recovery is expected to take about four to six weeks. The $5,000 ticket is just like an additional piece of agony for the linebacker.

The linebacker will surely remember this day for scoring his first-ever NFL touchdown, but will also avoid making hand gestures to his opponents next time onwards.
After getting a good start in the season opener, it is now the priority of the Niners to maintain the ongoing form. And also minimize any sort of injuries as they don’t want to end losing players just like Greenlaw.
The Niners will enter the Eagles’ nest, Lincoln Financial Field, for their week 2 encounter today. Kyle Shanahan has high hopes for the franchise this season. Let’s see if the players deliver the expected spell or will the Eagles wave them goodbye. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
