Back in February 2018, Russell Wilson was traded from MLB’s Texas Rangers to the New York Yankees, but the player was not sad; If anything, he was happy. His later father, Harrison Wilson III, was a lifelong Yankees fan and passed away in 2010 due to complications from diabetes. He always hoped for his son to wear the pinstripes one day and while it took Wilson time to fulfill the wish, he made sure to join the team. He had no desire to be the next Deion Sanders or Bo Jackson or reinvent himself as a two-sport athlete, but because he had so much love for baseball, he didn’t want to chop off his ties with the sport.

And so, the player was assigned to the Double-A Trenton roster. It was his childhood dream to be a Yankee, and he once revealed how he would tell his father, “Some day, Dad, I will be a Yankee.” He dreamt of this moment since he was 8 years old. He would train every morning near their Virginia home. At 5:30 a.m., Wilson, his brother, and his father would practice pitching. It was Wilson III’s vision that helped Russell Wilson aim high. So, in a tribute to his father on social media back in 2018, the NFL star said:

“I think he’s smiling from ear to ear… It was always something we talked about. He used to watch all the old Yankees and tell me stories. To be able put on the pinstripes, it’s pretty exciting. It’s going to give me chills.” Now it seems Russell Wilson wants his stepson, Future, to take their legacy ahead.

On March 17, Wilson shared an Instagram snap of stepson Future Zahir Wilburn in a Yankees midnight navy blue uniform, captioning it: “Future @mlb⭐ @yankees.” Last season, Future was a ball boy for the Steelers and also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ little league and now he has set his eyes on the Yankees. With this, Giants fans are buzzing with possibilities that this could perhaps hint at Russell Wilson’s own path in the NFL. But before we get to that, this isn’t the first time the QB has encouraged his son.

“Young Baller. Love seeing you shine! Grateful for moments like these at the Ballpark Together. Next Jeter? ⚾🏟️” Russell Wilson captioned, tagging the Yankees and MLB back on March 6. Future’s shift from the Pittsburgh Pirates’ little league to the Yankees’ youth squad isn’t just awesome—it’s a breadcrumb trail.

Last season, Wilson steered Pittsburgh to playoffs, throwing 16 touchdowns and 2,482 yards. But Pittsburgh’s late-season collapse (five straight losses) left doubts. While the QB would have loved to stay with the Steelers, the team is looking for a new QB and might choose Wilson only as their last option. So what is the veteran up to?

“He’s [Wilson] in a position where [he] can and is ready to sign somewhere,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted. “But he appears to be the backup No. 2 option in both Pittsburgh and New York.” It seems Wilson’s future will also depend on Aaron Rodgers’ decision. After all, both the teams are looking to get him on board.

Tommy DeVito’s lone figure echoes in the Giants. Wilson, ever the optimist, sees opportunity. He views the Giants as “a viable option for a while now,” Fowler added. But Big Blue’s 3-14 record stings. Can Wilson, 36, revive such a franchise? Or is he a bridge to a rookie—a role he’s never played? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, Rodgers toys with time.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Russell Wilson the missing piece for the Giants, or just another temporary fix?

Aaron Rodgers and his endless waiting game…

The Jets cut him on March 12, yet he lingers, flirting with Minnesota Vikings horn and the Steelers. “I don’t get the sense he’s in a hurry at all,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport mused. The Steelers’ offer? A one-year deal. The Giants’ pitch? Unclear. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s plot thickens.

They crave Aaron Rodgers’s arm but whisper to Wilson’s camp. For Wilson, the wait feels like extra innings with no reliever in sight, though. He would love to re-sign with the team, but the Steelers’ hesitation gnaws. Wilson’s 63.7% completion rate and 414-yard outburst in Cincinnati last November proved he’s no relic. But in this high-stakes poker game, Rodgers holds the aces.

For Giants GM Joe Schoen, patience wears thin but the hope of legacy lingers. Wilson’s grit mirrors New York’s heartbeat—relentless, unyielding. However, Rodgers’s mystique, even at 41, hypnotizes. He’s on the downside. But with the right cast? Yes.

As April inches closer, fans can only wait to see how things pan out. Wilson’s next pitch? Unknown. But he is still looking around. Reports revealed that the veteran visited with the Cleveland Browns on Thursday and the Giants on Friday but did not reach an agreement with either of them.

But coming back to the Steelers, they need to make a decision. Wilson and Rodgers are both veterans and viable choices for one year. But if both options don’t work, they will need to do some major recalibration and perhaps fans will get to see another Mason Rudolph era. What do you think will happen?
