Roger Federer – “Who Cares If I’m Ranked 3, 5, 9?”

World Number three, Roger Federer is certainly not concerned about his ranking on the ATP Tour. He is just cautious about his fitness and state of mind during tournaments.

“Points? Yeah, who cares? Who cares if I’m ranked 3, 5, 9? If I feel like I’m 100% fit, then I feel like I have a chance to win the tournament. But if I don’t feel that way but I’m ranked 1 or 3 or 5, whatever it may be, I know it’s going to be extremely more difficult and sometimes almost impossible, even though I feel like if I’m in a draw, usually I always give myself a chance,” said Roger Federer.

Every professional tennis player dreams about reaching the ATP’s summit someday and likewise, Roger Federer feels ATP ranking matters in the race to the World Number one spot. “So rankings is not the priority unless it’s battling for World No. 1, to be quite honest,” the Swiss added.

“But of course it can help that you might not play a certain guy earlier, but at the end of the day, I anyway feel like at one point you’ve got to beat them probably anyways. So it doesn’t matter if I play them in the semis, finals, or quarters or fourth round. Not really, actually, at the end of the day,” he continued.

With Federer’s win over Novak Djokovic at Nitto ATP Finals 2019 on Thursday, he ended the Serb’s reverie to conclude the year as the World Number one tennis player for the sixth time and assured Rafael Nadal the ATP’s top-spot.

Meanwhile, at ATP World Tour Finals 2019 the top-seed Rafael Nadal had to put his shoulder to the plow against Stefanos Tsitsipas to keep his semifinals hopes in London alive. It was a taxing three-hour battle where the Spaniard surpassed London’s semifinalist, Tsitsipas 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.

The semifinal qualification of World Number one, Nadal will depend on the last round-robin match in London. If Daniil Medvedev topples the reigning champion, Alexander Zverev, Rafa is through to the last-four round in London.
