Roger Federer breezed through his opening round at the Australian Open 2019, against Denis Istomin, to set up a second round match-up with the Brit Dan Evans. Roger Federer has started his season on a high, after winning the Hopman Cup title along with Belinda Bencic. The Swiss overpowered Denis Istomin in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 , 6-4.
Federer was content with the way he played, and is already looking forward to his second round match, Federer revealed in his on-court post match interview. “It’s been great, felt the ball really good, protected my serve well, didn’t allow Denis really to get into my service games very often”, said Roger Federer. “I was always in the lead, as well. Obviously that helps. I can free swing maybe a little bit more, at the same time I think I had to do some defense, some offense. It was a bit of everything”, he added.
Federer also explained how the confidence on his second serve helps him to experiment with the first. “I can trust my second serve in particular,” said the Swiss maestro. “When you trust your second serve, you can go after your first serve”, said Roger Federer. “I have good variation, to be quite honest”, he added. “This court plays slightly different to the Hopman Cup- at the Hopman Cup also I served very well”, said Federer.
“That’s always the most tricky part- how do you get through your service games time and time again because if you don’t get broken much, or hardly ever, not at all, you have so little pressure on the return games (then)you can really try out different things”, said Roger Federer.
“I started to feel that midway through the first set already that it was going to be difficult for Denis(Istomin) to get into my service games”, said the Swiss. “That relaxes you from the baseline, then good things really happen.” Federer has not lost a single match in Melbourne since 2017, and will look to win his 15th consecutive match here on Wednesday.
