Roger Federer announced today that he will miss out on the following few months of the tennis season. The reason behind it is the knee surgery he had yesterday in Switzerland, which will likely keep him out till grass season.
The sad news for Federer fans, and indeed tennis fans in general, means he will miss out on multiple events on the ATP Tour. Unfortunately, he will miss the entire clay court season, including the French Open.
In his statement, Roger said that he was struggling with his right knee for a while. After consulting with his team and some doctors, he opted to have arthroscopic surgery to rectify the issue.

As you can see from the statement he posted on social media, Roger Federer will miss out on multiple events in the following months. Those will include events like Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and Miami Open, both where Roger is the reigning champion.
How will the setback affect Roger Federer and his ATP Ranking?
Federer missing out on the tennis season due to injury or surgery is a rare sight. In his 20 odd years in tennis since turning professional in 1998, Federer has amassed more than a hundred titles, including 20 Grand Slams.
At 38 years of age, he remains at the pinnacle of the sport, currently sitting at the No. 3 spot in the World.
He first broke into the Top 10 in 2002 and stayed there for 734 weeks. The only time he dropped out was in November 2016, when incidentally, it was a knee injury that forced him out. However it did not last long, as he made it back in the 10 by January 2017.
In January 2020, he became the first man ever to stay in the Top 10 for more than 900 weeks. This kind of consistency and longevity is simply astonishing given the sky-high standards of athleticism today.

Alas, Federer will be missing for a while now. Fortunately, he will not drop out of the Top 10 rankings this time around.
Federer currently sits at number three with a total of 7130 ATP points. Should he miss everything until the grass season, Federer will be unable to defend 3180 of points in that time period.
hence, by the time he comes back for grass season, he will have 3950 points still to his name. Taking into consideration the current top 10 standings, Federer’s rank will fall somewhere between the 7th and 9th position.

A sharp drop, but not enough to fall out of the top 10.
But the Swiss maestro will have to hit the ground running once he comes back. He was the champion at Halle Open last year, as well as the runner-up at Wimbledon. Meaning he will have to defend a total of 1700 points, 500 at Halle and 1200 at Wimbledon, when he gets back.
