Blackout was the first COD battle royale mode that introduced us to the high-octane Call of Duty gameplay in an energetic battle royale environment. Released in 2018, Blackout was a part of Treyarch’s Black Ops 4. Although the game was not available for free, it gained popularity quickly as fans signed up for a thrilling experience.

After Infinity Ward released their free-to-play battle royale masterpiece, Warzone, earlier this year, it set a new standard. The game revolutionized the perception of BRs, posted astonishing numbers, and earned immense popularity. It’s safe to say Blackout eventually lost its charm and is long forgotten. However, new information has emerged that suggests the BR mode from Black Ops 4 could make a comeback soon.

Is Blackout set to return with Call of Duty 2020?

The intel comes from Venture Beat reporter Jeff Grubb, highly reputable for his inside knowledge about various games. According to him, Blackout will make a comeback with Call of Duty 2020. On June 9, he said in a tweet, “In other shocking news, Blackout is going to return in some form with Black Ops this year.”

Treyarch is currently working on the upcoming title, which is reportedly based on the Cold War and is likely to be a reboot of Black Ops. The official title for the game isn’t confirmed yet, but according to rumors, it could be Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. With two back to back games, Black Ops and Modern Warfare, featuring battle royale modes, it seems the upcoming game will also have a BR mode “in some form”.

But it doesn’t make sense for the developers and Activision to split the player base with two different BRs, especially after the massive success of Warzone. So, another insider has shared their knowledge about the circumstances.

Another notable insider, Tom Henderson, believes Infinity Ward’s Warzone and Treyarch’s Blackout won’t be separate entities. “There won’t be IWs Warzone and Treyarch’s Blackout. They’ll be the same BR… Just bits of both incorporated,” he tweeted.

Therefore, a new map, characters, and other elements from Blackout being incorporated into Warzone remain a possibility. Moreover, he also expects zombies to make a return with the battle royale.

Rather than splitting both the battle royales, adding assets from Blackout into Warzone is more feasible. For now, nothing remains confirmed as there is no official word from the developer or the publisher. Meanwhile, you can count on us to keep you posted with further developments.
