But not anymore! In his Arnold docuseries on Netflix, the Pumping Iron fame recalled how the duo met at the Robert F. Kennedy Tennis Tournament and married in 1986 after dating for 8 years. Arnie opened up about his love for Maria Shriver in the second episode of the series, ‘Actor’.

While Schwarzenegger was in search of a lead role in the movie business, he got an invitation from Ethel Kennedy to participate in a tennis tournament. Initially hesitant, Arnie went to the tournament and that’s where he met Maria Shriver. “When we are at the actual tennis tournament, I could see Maria looking at me the entire time,” confessed the 75-year-old in the docuseries.

The bodybuilding maestro went with Maria Shriver that evening after the tournament to Hyannis Port after she invited him. The action hero revealed that he went to the beach and swam in the ocean with her. “We climb into the boat, run around with the boat in the bay. And so this is how crazy it was”, a nostalgic FUBAR actor added in the documentary.

Revealing his love for his ex-wife, the Governator later confessed, “I really fell in love with Maria. Not because she was a Kennedy, but she just had the extraordinary personality.” He further revealed that he could see a “little rebel in her” which resonated with his character. “I wanted to escape from my home, from Austria. She also wanted to escape. So that was kind of beginning of Maria and I,” he summed up. And eventually, their bond grew stronger with time and the Predator star decided to marry Maria Shriver in 1985.

Schwarzenegger proposed to Shriver in the middle of the lake Thalersee, in the village he grew. The Commando actor took his future wife to his ancestral home as he is certain about Shriver knowing his roots. “It really meant a lot to me that she got to see where I came from and where it all began,” he told in the series.

They went on a little boat ride during their stay in the village and then in the middle of the lake, Arnie pulled out a ring to propose to Shriver. The dreamy proposal was followed by a grand church wedding at Hyannis Port.
