God of War creative director Cory Barlog is getting set for the release of the game in PS5. Previously, a lot had been discussed about the generation to generation transition. PS2 to PS3 transition was a difficult one for most developers. Phil Spencer, in an April event, said the transitions that will happen in this year’s console jump will be a leap that will equal ‘2D to 3D.’

Anybody who has been around for a few generations of games knows that these transition changes are tremendous. Firstly, what you consider good graphics today, one generation later will be frowned at. Take for example the Halo: Infinite gameplay criticism. People are so adapted to these generational changes they couldn’t bear to look at lower specs in a popular title.

This very topic was discussed with Cory Barlog as well. Barlog recently appeared in an episode of Animal Talking on Gary Whitta’s channel. In addition to him, the episode also hosted Selena Gomez, Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, and Shannon Woodward.

Animal Talking is an Animal Crossing: New Horizons talk show. In the show, Whitta asked Barlog about his opinions on PS5. He firstly jokes that the generation change is like a ‘surgical scene.’ Well in the past things may have gone ‘bloody’ for a few games. The transition was never swift, you see.

Imagine reading your way up to graduation finals only to be told that whatever you have studied is outdated. So you have to start all over again! It is painful, it is tedious. And as a game developer, Barlog knows where he is coming from.

Barlog on PS5 transition

The PS5 might be the one with the fastest loading time. Game developers have gone to lengths to hide the loading screens in previous titles as gamers patiently waited for the next level or mission or environment to load. Everybody hates it.

“The SSD is just amazing.”

Nonetheless, Barlog is hopeful about the immediate future. He also does get sad about the whole generational transition process.

With every generation, it always feels like we master the generation, right, then it’s like ‘oh, there’s a new one coming up,’ and you’re like ‘but I just finally got this one.'”

But with PS5, Barlog says things will be a lot different. He talks about a ‘foundation of understanding’ that he believes has been set up in all these years so it doesn’t feel like ground zero when the transition happens. Developers don’t need to feel hopeless anymore about the games going through a makeover.

To my understanding, Barlog is one of those creators who went down to the nitty-gritty of a classic game like God of War and hence, heeding his words makes a lot of sense. And it is not recent news that PS5 and Xbox Series X are going to be beast of consoles. The future seems bright for the next generation of gaming. A lot of doubts remain, for sure, but my feelings about this resonate Barlog’s words;
