The British Grand Prix concluded the tenth round of the 2022 Formula 1 championship. The big talkings points of the weekend were the opening lap crash, Carlos Sainz’s maiden win and the protesters that entered on track at Silverstone. Ahead of the event, the Northamptonshire police were provided with the intel about a possible infringement. The protest was against the global oil usage.
Multiple individuals were spotted on the Wellington straight wearing the ‘Stop the Oil Climate’. Homeboy hero Lewis Hamilton took to social media for reacting to the actions of the protesters.

Hamilton shared on his instagram story, “As we’ve seen today, this is a very dangerous sport. I wasn’t aware of the protests today, and while I’ll always support those standing up for what they believe in, it must be done safely. Please don’t jump onto our race circuits to protest, we don’t want to put you in harms way.”

The crash involving Guanyu Zhou brought out the red flag on the opening lap. This provided the local police and marshals with an opportunity to clear out the protesters from the track. Even though the method chosen was not correct by the protesters, they still made their voices heard.

While Mercedes driver Hamilton endorsed the right to protest, he criticized the method in which it was held. Nothing holds more value than safety, be it inside a F1 car for Zhou or outside for the protesters who put themselves in prospective danger.
F1 Twitter Condemns the Silverstone Protest
The actions of the individuals who opted to breach the barriers and enter the Silverstone circuit received backlash on social media. Although the protesters had the right intention for the global cause, the method chosen to raise their voices was incorrect.

Sat down after the cars went by

Wow protesters at silverstone if an F1 car hits you. You die and will be remembered as an idiot not a world saving hero. #BritishGP2022 pic.twitter.com/cmIj7ucvWO

We’ve just witnessed a scary incident on F1 at Silverstone yet protesters still think it’s acceptable to try and get on the track. Are you dumb? Fucking idiots #SilverstoneGP

Never want to see another crash like @ZhouGuanyu24’s at @F1 Silverstone but without red flag, these protesters would have been killed. At exit of blind corner, cars 3 abreast…they WOULD have been hit at 130mph+. There’s a right to protest, but this is lunacy #BritishGrandPrix pic.twitter.com/Td4Yld23gZ

Track invaders at the #BritishGP from onboard with Mick Schumacher. The halo saved Zhou’s life, but these “protesters” almost ended up with halos themselves. #F1 #silverstone pic.twitter.com/qeaSvQrx0u

Stupid protesters at Silverstone. If one of them gets hit and killed, no-one will have any sympathy for them. I’ll just feel for whatever driver hits them.

i was right next to the protesters on the track at silverstone and was genuinely so scared for their lives. if it wasn’t for the red flag we could’ve all seen someone die. even though no one was hurt i feel like it was a traumatising situation to watch

In the past, we have seen several F1 drivers use their platform to raise voices against social issues. Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have repeatedly protested on issues like ‘Black lives matter’ and ‘Stop Mining Tar Sands’ respectively.
