Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan believes that the PlayStation 5 will perform better than its predecessor. He recently gave an interview to the Korean Media while relaying the pre-order date for the next-gen console. While he reiterated a few points from his previous interviews about the benefits of the next-gen console and Sony’s market strategy, he also made a strong claim about the PS5’s market performance.

The PS4 was and continues to be immensely successful for Sony. With a wide variety of exclusives, a decent price, and exceptional features for its time, choosing between Xbox one and the PS4 was easy. However, Microsoft’s next-gen consoles aim to give the PS5 a tough competition this year. Therefore, choosing between the two won’t be as straightforward anymore.

Sony Plans to Sell Over 7mil Units of PlayStation 5 in the first year

Gamesindustry.biz reported the interview Jim gave to Naver, the Korean news site. In the interview, Jim predicted the console would “sell more in its first fiscal year than [we] sold in the first fiscal year at the time of [the] PS4 launch.”

In the first fiscal year, Sony went on to sell 7 million units of the PlayStation 4. Jim expects the PS5 to sell more than 7 million units. While the price of the digital edition is similar to the PS4, the optical edition costs $100 more. However, regardless of all the barriers, Jim is confident that they are going to meet this goal.

Gamesindustry.biz also reported about Sony dismissing claims that there are issues with the manufacturing of the PS5. Reports were suggesting that the pandemic had forced Sony to alter its production plans and that Sony would stock only 4 million units in the first fiscal year.

These claims had grown stronger after seeing the limited stock during the pre-orders. However, Sony has assured everyone that this is not the case.
