Justin Thomas has given Farmers Insurance Open a shock miss. But it appears his withdrawal was pre-planned. The 30-year-old has perhaps taken a break before stepping on the gas at the second signature event of the calendar year, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, as the latest reports indicate.

Thomas continues his hunt for a title after going winless last year. In fact, the Jupiter native’s last silverware came at Southern Hills in the 2022 PGA Championship. Although the 15-time PGA Tour winner is undoubtedly in better shape this year, victory has eluded him in his maiden outing since 2014, when he missed the 54-hole cut. But the University of Alabama alum seeks to change that next week.

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am confirmed on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle that the 15-time PGA Tour winner will tee up in California. Posting a picture of Thomas, the organizers wrote, “After a fast start to the 2024 season, we’re excited to welcome 2-time @PGAChampionship (PGA Championship) winner @JustinThomas34 (Justin Thomas) to the field next week!

Notably, this will be Justin Thomas’s maiden outing at the event. The 15-time PGA Tour winner kicked off this season at the American Express, where he blazed a red-hot trail. However, it came to cropper as Nick Dunlap, a Crimson Tide faithful like Thomas, became the first amateur to win on Tour since Phil Mickelson did it in 1991. As a result, the 30-year-old had to settle for a tied third position.

The 2022 PGA Championship winner will obviously look to turn the tide in his favor. Last season, Justin Thomas missed six cuts, netted only four top-10 finishes out of his 21 outings, and slipped from the 18th spot in OWGR to 26. Nevertheless, the two-time Major winner has plenty of positives to carry along to Pebble Beach, where he will duke it out with top PGA Tour pros.

Who else will join Thomas?

The second Signature Event will boast a stronger field than the season-opening Sentry. Along with Justin Thomas, his compatriots, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns, Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler, and Jordan Spieth are set to step onto the storied venue. Crossing the Atlantic, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, and Ludvig Aberg will also tee off at the $20 million purse event.

Coming fresh off a victory and a runner-up finish in Dubai, Rory McIlroy will also look to kickstart his PGA Tour season with silverware. The Northern Irishman will be honored with the Arnie Award for his contribution to the game as well. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will tee off on February 1.
