Scottie Scheffler is the new champion of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. With the win, the 25-year-old became the new W0rld No. 1 according to the OWGR standings.

Notably, he knew what was at stake if he had to win the WGC Match Play. However, when the reporter informed him of the same, the young golfer couldn’t hold back his tears.

“I never really got that far in my dreams, to be honest with you. I just,” he said, as he struggled to hold back his tears. However, an encouraging cheer from the audience cooled him off slightly as he continued.

“I never made it that far,” Scheffler added. “I am just happy to be out here.” Furthermore, the new Match Play champion had the same answer when he was interviewed later.

He explained that he had never thought about rankings before. “To be at the top, you know, even if it’s for a week or ever long,” Scheffler added, “It’s a pretty good feeling.” 

Scottie won the WGC against Kevin Kisner in the final round after scoring a par on the 15th. He was the runner in the championship last year, whereas Kisner was the 2019 champion. The young golfer defeated Dustin Johnson, who spent 91 weeks as a world no. 1, in the semi-finals.

His victory at the WGC helped him win 74 OWGR points as part of the winner’s benefit, which led him to become the World No. 1. However, it is not the only win Scheffler had this year. 

Current PGA Tour season victories of Scottie Scheffler

The 2022 WGC Match Play is the third victory of Scottie Scheffler this season. His first victory came at the WM Phoenix Open, where he defeated Patrick Cantlay in a playoff. Not to mention, it was also his first-ever victory in the PGA Tour events.

Scheffler also won the Arnold Palmer Invitational this year. He finished the final round with a 72; the highest non-major finish by a winner on the PGA Tour. Notably, his win at the API cruised him to the top of the FedExCup standings.

The 25-year-old Scheffler is the world’s best golfer, in all sense, since he is top on both FedExCup and OWGR standings. Undoubtedly, he deserves of all the praise and accolades coming his way.
