Tiger Woods is one of the best golfers to have ever played the game. He has bagged 82 PGA Tour wins and 15 major championships in his career so far. As a result, Woods was the wealthiest athlete in the world for a while during his prime. And he has been credited with changing golf as a sport, bringing popularity to this game.

Tiger turned pro in 1996, and the same year he won the Las Vegas Invitational. Notably, Woods’ coach back then, Butch Harmon, recently revealed an interesting story of then 20-year-old Tiger.

Butch Harmon reveals an interesting story about 20-year-old Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods won his first-ever PGA Tour at Las Vegas, and he bagged a hefty check of around $300,000. As he was preparing to go home, Butch Harmon, his coach back then, stepped in and gave some money to cover his student. He wrote this incident in his book, The Pro, and said even though he won an event, he still lived like a college student.

He even said Tiger still hadn’t got the practice of tipping, which is a very common practice on the PGA Tour. “So I gave the head locker-room attendant $300, not enough by any stretch, but all the cash I had on me at the time,” revealed Harmon

Furthermore, after getting into a limo with Tiger, Harmon told him, “You just won close to $300,000. You should have tipped them a grand. And you should do the same thing every week, win or lose. Every Tuesday when you show up, you should hand out hundreds to everybody in the locker room and thank them in advance for taking care of you.”

In this way, Butch Harmon instilled the virtues of generosity and humility in young Tiger, which clearly have stayed put.
