The second event of the 2021-22 PGA Tour season ended in an emphatic fashion at the Country Club of Jackson on Sunday. The tournament saw nearly a dozen players contend for the lead in the final round, and it was eventually Sam Burns, who came out on top.

Burns picked up his second PGA Tour title with a win at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He was always one of the favorites to win this event and proved his mettle against a dozen other competitors who wanted the win as badly as he did.

Why was Sam Burns wearing yellow on Sunday?

Over the years, we’ve seen some professional golfers stick to a particular choice of dress code when they reach the final round of an event. Tiger Woods is the most famous player following the tradition, and Rickie Fowler can be attributed with the same, too.

While Sam Burns does not follow any such practice, he had a significant season for wearing a yellow shirt on Sunday at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Burns was asked about it in the winner’s press conference, after which he revealed the touching reason behind it:

“Yeah, I think this week having the theme days and for me having a nephew that has spinal meningitis is currently in the hospital kind of hit close to home, so really thinking about him and my family and all others that have been affected really just try to raise awareness,” Burns said.

Sam Burns also revealed that his nephew has been in the hospital for over two weeks. This was just one of his ways to raise awareness about the condition and help his nephew’s family.

“He won’t remember it because he’s only five or six weeks old, but I’ll definitely remember it and our family will remember it and just really thinking about my sister and her husband and their family and what they have experienced. It’s been really hard and so just ask everyone to keep them in their thoughts and prayers,” Burns added.

How much did Burns win at Sanderson Farms?

The Sanderson Farms Championship is not one of the most lucrative events on the PGA Tour calendar. However, it still offers the winner a million-dollar prize purse, and Sam Burns took home all of it on Sunday.

Burns received a payout of  $1,260,000 from the total $7M prize purse. This marked Burns’ second win in 2021, following the victory at Valspar Championship earlier in the year.
