It’s been almost three decades since Phil Mickelson joined the PGA Tour. Notably, the player and the organization always shared a good relationship until a recent comment from the golfer triggered the latter. Here’s how the American golf organization reacted to Phil’s “obnoxious greed” comment

According to Phil, the PGA Tour is not paying its golfers what they deserve. Although they are a sports organization, the PGA doesn’t pay their golfers 55% of their revenue, as others do. Phil said that only 26% of the organization’s revenue goes to its players.

Lefty also mentioned that golfers don’t earn much from media rights. In fact, he even accused PGA of charging a fee from the golfer if he wanted to telecast outside the Tour event. Mickelson explained he personally experienced this when he organized ‘The Match.’

PGA Tour’s reply to the accusations made by Phil Mickelson

Responding to Phil’s accusations, one of the PGA executives said, “Phil’s making stuff up that is just not true.” According to a memo shared by the Tour, $800 million goes to the golfers every year through them. However, it didn’t mention how much percentage of the total revenue was going to the players.

PGA also replied to Mickelson‘s accusation of the organization asking for a fee to telecast an event outside Tour. They explained that it was not Mickelson who paid for it, but the program sponsors. The PGA Tour executives further added that more than half of such fees are redistributed among the players. So, it is Mickelson who is benefited from levying such fees.

The organization also commented that it doesn’t make $20 billion in revenue, unlike Phil’s allegations. One of its representatives said, “No, they aren’t. That’s just not accurate.”
