Justin Thomas recently graded 2021 as a C-minus with regards to his golf performance. There were lots of ups and downs for Thomas this year and that includes his emphatic win at the 2021 Players Championship. Moreover, the 28-year-old is currently in Mexico participating in the Mayakoba Golf Classic where he opened his campaign with a wild round.

The first round of a tournament always brings out the nerves and whatnot. It does not spare even experienced campaigners like Justin Thomas. As JT teed off for Round 1 at Mayakoba Golf Classic on Thursday, little did he know about the rollercoaster ride he was about to embark on.

What did Justin Thomas shoot in the opening round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic?

A lot of players struggled to get going in the opening round of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. Indeed, the El Camaleón course is not an easy layout to play around and one needs to assess it properly to get going.

That being said, a practice round was simply not enough for Justin Thomas to go all guns blazing in Round 1. Thomas suffered a disastrous start on Thursday after kicking things off from the back nine. He carded a 3-over-par starting from the tenth but soon made up for his mistakes.

JT did not enjoy his first nine holes of the day but bounced back in incredible fashion in the second half of his round. After shooting a 38 in the first nine holes, the 14-time PGA Tour champion fired six birdies in the back nine to save his scorecard from turning worse.

A disastrous 38 in the first nine holes was saved by a fabulous 30 in the subsequent nine. After 18-holes, JT had shot 3-under par for the tournament. The 3-under does not paint the entire picture as one needs to have a look at his detailed scorecard to understand what Justin Thomas managed to pull off.

Even though Thomas messed up his first nine, he pulled up his socks and went on a wild birdie streak. As he posted his bizarre achievement on Twitter, golf fans could not help but react to his massive save.
