Can Durant and Curry lead Team USA to gold in Paris, or are their best days behind them?

Over the brief period when they combined forces in the Bay Area, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant had a legitimate case of being the greatest duo in league history. Since they parted ways in 2019, fans have awaited their reunion, hoping to see both superstars in the same uniform again. Although not in the NBA, the dream might come true in Paris in a few days as Steph and KD will be teammates again; this time for Team USA in the Olympics. However, The Slim Reaper’s injury hadn’t allowed the country’s leading scorer in the competition to take part in the team’s 5 exhibition games.

Coach Steve Kerr has taken a lot of heat from the fans for delaying KD’s return. However, we might not have to wait any further. As per EssentiallySports’ reporter Grant Afseth, Kevin Durant addressed the media in Paris on Thursday and said, “Each day is getting better. Another intense practice today, and we’ll see how I feel.” While the fanbase definitely anticipates his return in the Serbia game, there was a certain sense of unrest with the veteran and his fitness timeline for Team USA, just a few days ago.

Touching down in Lille accompanying the Hoopers for the Olympics, veteran insider Brian Windhorst made a shocking confession regarding the former Warriors star yesterday. “Kevin was not happy with me!”. After Durant’s lingering calf strain that caused him to miss all five showcase games, Brian reported that 3x Olympics Gold Medalist might not play Team USA’s first game in Paris against Serbia on July 28. But after his report, KD was not happy with that assumption. “That’s because he’s working very very hard to get back from this calf injury, playing for the National team is extremely important to him, he’s playing in his fourth Olympics,” Windhorst continued.

However, the insider revealed the main reason why the Steph-Durant reunion was being delayed. “The truth is that Steve Kerr has delayed his window.” As KD began practicing with the team, it was expected that he’d be able to play at least one game in London, either against South Sudan or Germany. However, his former Warriors’ coach reportedly decided to put him on hold a little longer and make him go through more practice sessions and scrimmages before he could make his first appearance in the Olympics.

Now, after Durant’s latest interview, things look a bit different from what the ESPN Insider had initially reported.

“Kevin is anxious to play, wants to play, doesn’t think it’s gonna be an issue,” Windhorst told ESPN. But he might still need to pass the tests that Steve Kerr has put in front of him, to make the head coach believe that he is ready to hit the hardwood. “The plan is for him to scrimmage tomorrow back in Paris, where the team is gonna go and then they’re gonna reevaluate things when they get through that scrimmage,” Windhorst revealed.

Well, one positive sign is that Kevin Durant did participate in a practice session soon after reaching Lille. Although not a team scrimmage, the two-time champ had a non-contact session, working on his shooting stroke and preparing to face Nikola Jokic’s squad.

But after the latest interview of 2x NBA MVP, it is very likely that we might finally see him running the floor with his former teammate Steph Curry. More importantly, Team USA needs a scorer like KD, who has previously led them to three straight gold medals in the Olympics and is also the nation’s top scorer at that stage with 435 points in 22 appearances. And every American is hoping for him to make a heroic return from injury soon and help bring glory to the nation once again.
