Will the Oregon Ducks fall victim to Nick Saban's 'relief syndrome' and lose their winning edge?

7-0! Dan Lanning’s squad is off to an impressive start this season. The team has showcased phenomenal gameplay on both sides of the field. Last Saturday, they did not even let Purdue start and won by 35-0. Yes, you heard it right. This undefeated streak marks a significant achievement for Lanning and his players, as they aim to continue their success throughout the season.

But before that, legend Nick Saban has a message for the Oregon Ducks and head coach Lanning. Pat McAfree, a sports analyst, shared a short interview on X where Saban speaks about a troubling pattern in college football, where discipline issues and roster management can derail even the most promising seasons. Things started off well for the new head coach Kalen DeBoer and Stephen Sarkisian as well. But continuing the winning streak and being on No. 1 is not easy. Is the Oregon Ducks the next victim?

The former head coach explained that while every player aspires to be number one, achieving that status can lead to an automatic psychological phenomenon he refers to as relief syndrome. “I think that’s why there’s, you see, a little difficulty in people staying at number one for very long. I think people get complacent pretty easily. And you know, if you went into a room and you had a whole team full of guys, and you stood up and said, Who wants to be number four? Nobody had raised their hand if you said, Who wants to be number one, everybody? So once you get there, there’s an automatic psychological, I call it relief syndrome, that I should be able to rest on my laurels, but as soon as you rushed on your laurels, you really became the team everybody wanted to be.”

He further pointed out that hearing your number one repeatedly can lead to a false sense of security. “So now it’s even more competitive when you play. And then I think people are affected by external factors. You’re hearing you’re number one, you’re number one, so, but it doesn’t really mean anything, because it doesn’t matter to be number one until you’re number one at the end.”

As college football heats up, maintaining a winning streak becomes increasingly challenging. Head coach Dan Lanning has acknowledged the threat posed by Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer.

Dan Lanning on stopping Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer

The Oregon Ducks have shown impressive dominance in their seven victories this season, with only two close games, highlighting Dan Lanning’s effective leadership and the team’s preparation. As they prepare to face the Illinois Fighting Illini, the big question looms: can they continue their winning streak, or will Illinois put a stop to it?

Sports Illustrated reported HC Lanning’s statements on QB before they go to Illinois. He emphasized the difficulty of defending a player like Altmyer, who excels at both running and throwing the ball. “You’re defending a guy that can also run and throw the ball extremely well, but he’s been a good decision-maker. You don’t get to this point in the season and only have one interception and be a bad decision-maker. So he gives his guys an opportunity to go make plays on the ball.” Lanning added, “I think they do a really good job calling a game for him and allowing him to play within the system. And then he does a great job with his feet when those opportunities are taken away.”

Although the Oregon Ducks have faced talented players like Ashton Jeanty from Boise State this season, going up against Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer will present a unique challenge.
