Since ‘The Lion Killer’ Garry Tonon’s spectacular victory against formerly unbeaten Russian star Shamil Gasanov at ONE Fight Night 12 on Friday, the MMA community has been in skepticism. The ONE community was prepared for the battle, but they did not foresee the outcome. Prior to the bout with Tonon, Gasanov had voiced a great deal of confidence, but fate had other plans.

After the video of their bout got featured on Instagram, the fans couldn’t stop expressing their respect for ‘The Lion Killer’. The video got posted by ONE Championship’s official Instagram handle and garnered a great deal of attention from the fans.

The video captured the exact second Tonon forced Gasanov to tap. As the kneebar from Tonon tightened, Gasanov appeared to be in excruciating pain. The video caption read, Garry Tonon hands Shamil Gasanov his first pro MMA loss with a nasty kneebar!”  

Given how motivated Gasanov was by Khabib Nurmagomedov, one fan mocked him saying, “bro just wanted to be khabib so bad”

“Man did not want to tap” observed another fan.

“Screaming in agony is considered a verbal tap as well,” added another.

“For Garry Tonon to win this by a knee bar after the beating he took is mind boggling. What a comeback.” wrote another impressed by Tanon’s comeback win. 

Tanon’s victory appeared to astound the fan, who couldn’t help but congratulate him- “It gets worse every time you look at! Congrats Garry! “

“The first time I have heard a Russian fighter yell in agony,” observed another.

“The whole set up was beautiful. Wish they would have showed it!” wrote another fan.

The outcome of the bout was captivating enough that it drew the attention of the BJJ great Gordon Ryan

 Ryan re-posted the video as an Instagram story and wrote: “I guess leg locks work again lol”. Ryan appeared thrilled by Tonon’s victory and was even more so by the leg hold that terminated the fight.

‘King’ has had his own rivalry with Tonon and is a vocal figure in BJJ. The surprise win seemed to have impressed the 28-year-old who made it a point to share it on his socials.
