Despite scoring a win in his last ONE Championship outing, former two-division ONE World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen feels there’s room for improvement in his upcoming featherweight MMA battle against Ilya Freymanov at ONE on Prime Video 2 this Friday, September 30.

The 33-year-old star dissected Kirill Gorobets on the feet throughout their matchup at ONE: LIGHTS OUT in March before downing him for good with a body shot in the final round to return to winning ways after a couple of shaky performances.

Nguyen fails to take much credit for the win over his Ukrainian rival, though, and he feels that he should be doing more when preparing for a fight in order to really hit his stride inside the Circle again.

“I’d say the best is yet to come. I think styles make fights, and just the style that Kirill Gorobets brought, I did not know what type of fighter he was going to be. I did not watch any tape. I did not watch any videos or [do] any study,” he said.

“I let the coaches do the work. But the way the fight happened was totally opposite to what we prepared for. It was just more ‘Go with the flow, don’t put yourself under unnecessary stress.’ It was no fluke [though], him having 11 wins and one loss.”

“The Situ-Asian” knows well what it takes to keep up with the world-class level of talent that ONE has on offer.

Martin Nguyen is ready for everyone ONE Championship throws at him

After all, he has shared the stage with talents like Kevin Belingon, Bibiano Fernandes, Eduard Folayang, Kim Jae Woong, Marat Gafurov, and ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian Lee, so he knows he must come prepared at all times.

With an impressive win in the bag, the former double-champ is ready to make his way back to the top. And he’s willing to take on anything presented to him – starting with Freymanov at ONE on Prime Video 2.

“All of my fights have been with top-of-the-range guys, guys that have been on humongous streaks or coming off huge wins. I’m there, man, I’m there for the test, whatever ONE Championship gives me, I’m there to test myself, regardless,” he said.

“As I said, every fight that I have is going to be the hardest fight of my life whether the guy is ranked or not. So it’s just up to me to turn up on that night and do my job. [I won’t] force anything that is not needed to be forced, and the rest is history. It’ll fall into place.”
