Liam Harrison vs. Jonathan Haggerty in England—Is this the fight we've all been waiting for?

Liam Harrison and Jonathan Haggerty are two of the best fighters from the United Kingdom and while they will both be in action next weekend, there is clamor to see them test each other in battle.

At ONE 168: Denver on U.S. primetime on Friday, September 6, both fighters will figure in key Muay Thai bouts inside Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado. Harrison will be facing Seksan Or Kwanmuang in a catchweight Muay Thai bout in a battle of legends of the sport. Meanwhile, Haggerty will be defending his ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title against Superlek Kiatmoo9 in the main event.

The event will be the promotion’s second event in the United States. Earlier this year, they also broke new ground by mounting their first-ever event in Qatar. In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Harrison was asked about the possibility of ONE heading into the UK with him and Haggerty headlining the event.

“I would love to see ONE championship come to England. Will it be me and Haggerty? I don’t see that happening personally. I don’t see how the stars can align for that to work,” he said.

A pairing between Haggerty and Harrison will be massive for fight fans in the UK as a meeting of the old and the new guard. However, “Hitman” has hinted that he may not be as springy as his younger self to match up with the in-form Haggerty.

The 38-year-old declared that there is a rightful challenger for “The General” if he successfully defends his belt against Superlek, and there is still a host of other fighters who would claim their shot at gold no matter who comes out on top. He did say that he would not oppose an offer if the event comes at a particular timeline.

Have an interesting take?

“For me to be around by the time he has defended against Superlek, Nico (and) whatever happens after that. And obviously, there is a queue but like I said, if they did it earlier next year, if Haggerty keeps the belt against Superlek, which is a hard ask in itself. If he keeps the belt they did a show in England early next year, [then maybe it’s possible],” he said.

Liam Harrison Shares His Thoughts On Potential UK Show Headliners

“Hitman” believes that the bantamweight division is stacked with dangerous contenders, with Scottish star Nico “King of the North” Carrillo at the very top of the list.

Carrillo is currently on a four-fight win streak, with all fights ending in a spectacular stoppage. Among his victims are veteran Muangthai PK Saenchai, former divisional king Nong-O Hama, and #5-ranked Saemapetch Fairtex. “King of the North” has called his shot next, and Harrison agrees that he deserves his shot.

In the same interview, he suggested Haggerty take on Carrillo in the featured bout of the card while he goes against a different legend in the co-main event.

“Haggerty and Nico is the main event. As the co-main against, I don’t know any 140lb. Rodtang could come to 140 lbs or something like that. Imagine that! That’d be insane. So there are some good fights that you can make now that I can go in between both divisions and stuff.  I could even make 135 lbs if my nutritionist could put himself to it,” he said.

Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon currently reigns as the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion and has proven dominant in his reign. Stepping up to bantamweight could be an option for him in order to set up a future rematch with Supelek, who could win the division’s top prize next weekend. If not, Harrison suggesting he could make the 135-pound limit could entice Rodtang to a superfight with the Leeds native in the potential UK show.

Liam Harrison And Jonathan Haggerty To Face Dangerous Opponents at ONE 168: Denver

While ONE’s debut on UK soil is not yet firm, their return to North America is just days away with Liam Harrison and Jonathan Haggerty having busy nights against two of the best strikers in the world.

Standing across Harrison will be Seksan, a Thai veteran with close to 300 fights in his resume. “The Man Who Yields To No One” was undefeated in eight fights in 2023 before absorbing his first loss in ONE earlier this year. He will be eager to get back in the win column and prove that his striking is in a world-class level against the British slugger.

Meanwhile, Haggerty will defend his Muay Thai belt against the ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Champion, Superlek Kiatmoo9, in the main event. “The Kicking Machine” owns a win over Haggerty outside the promotion in 2018 and he will look to show the world that it was not a fluke. With much higher stakes this time around, expect both fighters to truly show who the best in the world is when they square off in the middle of the Circle.

So the event at Ball Arena on Sept 6 is going to be epic! Who do you think might win this bout?
