Smilla Sundell is happy that she is a World Champion in a promotion that is home to the world’s most elite strikers. The ONE Women’s Strawweight Muay Thai World Champion cemented her position on top of the division by fending off a valiant challenge from atomweight Muay Thai queen herself.

She defeated Allycia Hellen Rodrigues at ONE Fight Night 14 this past September, and now truly feels she is fulfilling her goals. “I feel good. It’s been my goal since I really decided that I wanted to do this, so I’m happy getting to live my dream,” Sundell told EssentiallySports in an exclusive interview.

ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong recently made claims that the Asia-based promotion is home to the planet’s best strikers across all disciplines, including mixed martial arts. While some fans may have had their doubts, Sundell quickly agreed with Sityodtong’s statement, and she backed it up by sharing her own experiences.

“Yeah, I think ONE has the world’s best striking fighters, especially in Muay Thai and kickboxing,” she said.  “I think the level of competition in ONE is very high. You got more pressure, but also, the fights are better because ONE picks out the best in the world.”

ONE Championship made considerable waves in September thanks to a slew of epic performances from some of its striking stars, which gave Sityodtong the confidence to make such claims regarding the overall roster. At ONE Friday Fights 34, the highly anticipated clash between Rodtang Jitmuangnon and Superlek Kiatmoo9 broke viewership records in Thailand and was trending worldwide via YouTube.

And just one week later, at ONE Fight Night 14, Sundell defended her crown, and former Muay Thai and kickboxing queen Stamp Fairtex claimed the vacant ONE Women’s Atomweight MMA World Title. On Friday, December 8, the world’s largest martial arts organization will once again showcase its elite strikers with an all-Muay Thai card at ONE Fight Night 17: Kryklia vs. Roberts.
