ONE Fight Night 15 finished off with a stoppage as predicted, but not in the way that anyone could have imagined. This past weekend in U.S. primetime on Friday, October 6, Thanh Le reclaimed gold by taking the ONE Interim Featherweight MMA World Championship as he defeated Russian knockout artist Ilya Freymanov in the main event of ONE Fight Night 15.

The two men combined for a total of 21 knockout wins between them, and fans naturally expected their showdown to end before the final bell reverberated inside the legendary Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Things quickly picked up for both guys as they exchanged shots in the middle of the ring before Freymanov took the fight to the ground. It proved to be a crucial mistake though, as Le took his opponent’s leg and worked on a heel hook to get a finish at the 1:02 mark of the first round. Following his win, the Vietnamese-American said he didn’t plan on taking the finish the way that he did, but he wasn’t going to let the opportunity to showcase his skills on the ground when it was available.

Absolutely not! He took me off my feet. I hit him, he didn’t like it, he got rocked, put me on my back. Problem is, I’m really f*****n’ good there. So s*** like that happens. So take me down, please! Let’s do it,” he shared emphatically during the in-ring interview with Mitch Chilson. Le credited his team at 50/50 and Midcity MMA for equipping him with the skills he needed to pull off his first submission victory in the world’s largest martial arts organization. He was also awarded a US$50,000 performance bonus for his effort.
