One of the biggest tournaments in the history of Muay Thai will take place this year, and ONE Championship will play host to this cracking striking fiesta. At the official ONE Fight Night 6: Superbon vs. Allazov press conference, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong revealed a ONE Openweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix, featuring 16 of the best athletes, who will cross swords for a US$1,000,000 grand prize.

“I’m announcing the greatest Grand Prix in the history of Muay Thai,” Chatri told those in attendance at the W Hotel Bangkok on Wednesday, July 11. “Sixteen of the best fighters in the world will descend, this year, for US$1 million. The very, very, very best, irrespective of weight class.

“Fans all over the world, please tell me who you wanna see. Do you wanna see Superbon? Do you wanna see Rodtang? Who do you wanna see because this is an Openweight Grand Prix.” The ONE head honcho did not reveal further details, such as when the iconic 16-man tournament will take place or how athletes will be selected.
But the lifelong martial artist guaranteed two things to combat sports fans – action and excitement – due to the nature of the fixture.

“I promise you this will blow up the sport all over the world. With our global broadcast, people will be tuning in from all over the world,” the self-made entrepreneur added. “The very best – the very, very, very best, irrespective of weight class – Muay Thai World Champions will be competing. Sixteen of the world’s best.”

Chatri Sityodtong also revealed ONE’s long-term vision to elevate Muay Thai
The news of the tournament will certainly spark interest among the strikers plying their trade at the Singapore-based promotion such as Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon, Nong-O Gaiyanghadao, Superbon Singha Mawynn, Regian “The Immortal” Eersel, and Joseph “The Hurricane” Lasiri.
The ONE Openweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix is just one of many plans the organization has to elevate Muay Thai to unprecedented heights over the coming years.

During the official ONE Lumpinee Press Conference in Bangkok last year, Sityodtong said that the ONE Lumpinee deal will see the promotion hold at least 52 events at Lumpinee Stadium every Friday night this year. In addition, Sityodtong also said that ONE would invest US$100 million to the growth of Muay Thai across the globe.
