Mikey Musumeci Reveals the Role of Social Media in Getting His Bout Confirmed Against ONE Strawweight World Champion Jarred Brooks

ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Champion Mikey Musumeci will defend his crown against an unexpected challenger in his upcoming outing in ONE Championship, but it didn’t take much to find him. On Friday, August 4, “Darth Rigatoni” defends his crown against strawweight mixed martial arts king Jarred Brooks in the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 13: Allazov vs. Grigorian, which goes down inside the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. 

Musumeci is fresh off a second successful World Title defense against IBJJF No-Gi World Champion Osamah Almarwai at ONE Championship’s debut event in the United States, ONE Fight Night 10: Johnson vs Moraes, just over two months ago.

Social media brought the Jarred Brooks bout to Mikey Musumeci

In an interview with ONE, the 27-year-old revealed he’s still riding a high from the excitement of competing at such a historic event. “Competing in Denver was such a crazy experience for me,” Musumeci said. “You know it was ONE Championship’s debut in the U.S, so we had so much pressure. The American fans loved it. I’m from America. It’s my country. And it was just an honor for me to be a part of that card.”

Musumeci’s latest win continued his unbeaten run in the Singapore-based promotion. He now sits on a pristine 4-0 slate that includes two World Title defenses. Thus far, he has defeated an innovator in the sport in Masakazu Imanari, a sambo World Champion in Gantumur Bayanduuren, and a couple of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialists in Almarwai and Cleber Sousa. Always a fan of new challenges, however, the American grappling prodigy saw an interesting callout on social media earlier this year and didn’t hesitate to take it on.

“I’m on Instagram one day. All of a sudden, I get tagged in this video, and it’s Jarred Brooks, the current ONE Strawweight World Champion, saying he wants to do a grappling match with me. I see this video, and I’m like, ‘Wow, I didn’t expect this.’ But yeah, that’s how this match came about”. “The Monkey God” has yet to defend his World Title since claiming it from longtime divisional king Joshua Pacio in December 2022, but he has made it clear that he’s hungry to get back in action. 

After getting past ranked opponents on his way to the top of his division, Brooks has said he’s open to fighting anyone – in any sport.

He has called for a fight against flyweight titleholder and MMA GOAT Demetrious Johnson and most recently threw his name out there for a potential showdown with Musumeci. One of his wishes has now been granted, but he’ll have to get past the grappling might of Musumeci if he wants to stand as a two-sport ONE World Champion, which won’t be an easy task to overcome.
