Mikey Musumeci will face a different challenge in his upcoming outing at ONE Championship, and he’s as excited to see how it plays out as the rest of the world.
“Darth Rigatoni” will defend the ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Title against strawweight MMA king, Jarred Brooks, in the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 13: Allazov vs. Grigorian, this Friday, August 4, with their much-anticipated affair going down inside Bangkok, Thailand’s iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

Musumeci has conquered all four of his opponents in ONE with relative ease, displaying his prodigious grappling skills against fellow BJJ specialists and a Sambo World Champion thus far. Against Brooks, though, he’ll be dealing with an accomplished wrestler and mixed martial artist hungry to prove he can succeed in a new sport. It’s a challenge that the defending world champion is eager to take on, as it offers him a new task that he believes will help him grow.
“I think that he brings a different element to this submission grappling than what people are used to,” Musumeci told ONE. “I think that MMA is a sport where they have to be finishers. They have to go to attack you in submissions. What excites me about this match is, again, I love the feeling of uncomfortability – something different. Jarred’s going to give me a different look. A different feeling than what I’m used to with jiu-jitsu people.”
“The Monkey God” has done nothing but win since arriving in ONE in 2021. He has utilized his ground game to gain favorable positions, and two of his four wins have come via submission. He will be hoping to pick up a third tap this weekend and leave no doubt of his grappling mastery against Musumeci.
That will be easier said than done, though, as the Evolve MMA representative is one of the best grapplers on the planet today, with four IBJJF World Championships to his name, along with an IBJJF No-Gi World Title and, of course, his ONE World Title. Musumeci’s tireless work on the mats prepares him for any opponent, making him an extremely difficult opponent for “The Monkey God” to overcome. And he’ll be all the more dangerous given he’s been “obsessing” about ways to end their match.

Jarred Brooks will bring forwards his MMA style
“He will approach this as an MMA fighter. He’s going to come out with a different aggression. And I think it’s going to be very interesting to see how I respond to that because I only train with jiu-jitsu people,” he said.

“MMA guys are always very difficult to finish, so I’ve just been obsessing about how I’m going to finish him. And I feel like I’m ready to finish him in any part of the match. The legs, the arms, a choke–anywhere it goes, I’m prepared. But again, I respect Jarred so much, and that’s why I’m preparing so much for him right now.”
ONE Fight Night 13 will be broadcast live and free on Prime Video for fans across North America with an Amazon subscription.
